How a Heat Pump Works

An air sourced heat pump hot water system works by a refrigerant gas being inside an evaporator absorbing heat from the ambient atmosphere (this is usually aided by a fan to increase the air flow available to the evaporator). This refrigerant is then compressed by a compressor which adds additional heat to the refrigerant. This hot refrigerant is absorbed into the water of the tank either through a pumped circulation or tank wrap/coil immersion heat exchange.

When looking into a purchasing a heat pump hot water system there are multiple factors that you need to consider:

What are you trying to achieve by installing a heat pump hot water system?

  • Do you want to reduce energy costs?
  • Do you want to increase the volume of hot water as you are currently running out?
  • Do you want to reducing your environmental footprint?

Factors that determine your decision for choosing a suitable product:

How many people in the house/how much hot water you are going you use?

I usually suggest going larger in storage capacity (250L capacity and above) for your heat pump hot water system. This is to ensure you have enough hot water for your family. Furthermore, due to the slow recovery during low ambient air temperatures this additional storage will act as a buffer to reduce running out.

Is the heat pump going to be running on an off peak cycle/continuous cycle or day time timer function?

A heat pump uses the ambient air temperature to heat the water. As such, heat pump hot water systems are more efficient at heating during the day time as it is usually much hotter during the day as opposed to at night. So if you can take advantage of programmed heating time frames I would suggest setting a timer to heat the water from 11:00AM-4:00PM.

The location of the heat pump/tank

It is important to consider the location of the hot water system compared to the fixture outlets. The smallest run of pipe possible is ideal. Additionally, it is important to think about the orientation the heat pump on the house. The North facing position is ideal for general day time heating, but you may look at East or West facing position depending on if you have PV electricity already facing a certain orientation. The more sun available for the heat pump to use for heating the water the more thermally efficient it will be.

Do you have PV electricity installed on your roof?

You can treat a heat pump like a thermal battery by using a timer function. Rather than storing electricity in a battery, you can store it in a thermal form ready for use later when required.

Where you live geographically – consider weather and ambient air temperatures

Location, location, location. The colder it is where you live the less efficient a heat pump hot water system will be. Whereas, warmer temperatures enable the heat pump to be more efficient.

Product selection for “Heat Exchange” or “Tank Wrap”

Heat exchange uses a circulating pump to transfer the heat from the heat pump into the water of the tank. Tank wrap uses a coil either inside or wrapped around the hot water system to transfer the heat into the tank. Therefore, tank wrap has one less component compared to the heat exchange type.

Heat pump COP and what this means

COP or co efficient of performance for a heat pump reflects the efficiency of the product. The higher the COP the less power the system uses. Most heat pumps work on close to 1:4 COP.

Negatives of heat pump hot water systems

There are a lot of benefits and positives to heat pump hot water systems. However, it is worth noting that they are not perfect and here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Heat pumps have multiple components compared to a standard electric hot water system
  • Heat pumps can struggle to heat the water in low ambient air temperatures
  • Heat pumps have higher upfront cost compared to a standard electric hot water system
  • If a heat pump breaks down it is harder to get specialists to fix these systems as they require high level of skill and expertise.

Though no worries if you do have dramas with your heat pump as Same Day Hot Water Service is able to service all Heat Pump brands.
