How does a Continuous Flow Hot Water System work?

Continuous flow is also referred to as on demand hot water or tankless hot water system. Unlike storage hot water tanks, the continuous flow hot water system works by having water flow through a heat exchanger heating the water instantaneously rather than storing it. That is why you can have “endless hot water” because as the water passes through the heat exchanger it heats up when you turn on a tap or shower to use the hot water.

The minimum flow rate for a continuous flow hot water system to produce hot water is 1.5L/minute to 2.7L/minute. To put this in perspective, for example, in NSW Water efficiency measures for shower heads are a maximum flow rate of 9 litres per minute (3 star rated water efficiency). So continuous flow hot water systems will work for showers, dishwashers, taps, etc as the minimum flow rate when you turn on the tap will be greater than 1.5L/minute to 2.7L/minute.

Types of Continuous Flow Hot Water Systems

Continuous Flow hot water systems are available in both Natural Gas and LPG. All continuous flow systems have fan forced electronic ignition so no need to relight pilot flames. Though it is important to note that mechanical Instantaneous Systems can still have a pilot flame. Temperature control

Another benefit of a continuous flow hot water system is the control you have over the water temperature.
